Be a counselor

Counselors come from 6th, 7th and 8th grade in YOSS, and they’re the reason the program works. You’ll run a group of younger boys for about ten Fridays. Counselors are trained, and they’re paid — what you get is based on your grade, how you do the job, and how happy the boys were.

Brothers apply separately. We may talk your application over with rebbeim, teachers or the administration to make sure the program is a good fit for you. Applying does not guarantee a spot, even if you were a counselor before.

The money, plainly

What it costs to apply
$150 in 6th grade, $125 in 7th, $100 in 8th.Refunded if we don’t accept you. Not refunded if you’re hired and then removed.
What it pays
From $30 for a 6th grader up to $100 for some 8th graders.Based on your grade, how well you worked, and how happy the boys were. A few of the top staff also get a bonus.

Put down a first and a second choice. We try hard to give people what they asked for.

What we ask for

  • Your grade and your rebbe.
  • Your mother’s and father’s emails and cells.
  • Your own email and phone, if you have them.
  • Why you feel you can do this — in detail. We read that part closely.
  • A reference from outside the Yeshiva of South Shore. We email them automatically, so you don’t have to chase anyone.
  • Brothers applying as counselors, or coming as campers.
  • How you’re getting home afterwards.

One thing we’re strict about

If you get approved and then can’t make a Friday, tell us through the site — and tell us early. Short notice leaves a group of little boys standing there without their counselor. It happens, and we’d always rather know. But we track it, and it isn’t professional.

Also: all counselors meet at 12:00 every Friday on the schedule for training. No electronic devices during the program, and nobody goes off-grounds without a rebbe.
