What is the Sports Bonanza?
The Sports Bonanza is a weekly program for grades Kindergarten through 5th grade that has been run for over 14 years by Rabbi Drebin and Rabbi Ross. The boys are split into age appropriate groups and with strong supervision, play and practice a variety of sports depending on the week.
How do I sign up?
You can click here.
How many sessions are there?
This is the second of the 3 main sessions. The dates are January 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 31st. February 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, and March 7th and the 10th week is the 21st- and it's the last/makeup week.
Is this just playing ball?
Certainly not! The sports counselors together with Rabbi Drebin , Rabbi Gewirtz, and Rabbi Ross help the boys develop proper techniques and fundamentals. We begin by discussing what skills we’re focusing on, then we practice together, and finally we play.
What if my son does not like sports?
Let's face it, most kids that don’t like sports are just not as good at it. With some motivation and practice, they can begin to enjoy most games quite a bit. Keep in mind, if your son is vehemently opposed to coming, he will probably not gain very much.
What if my son is very good at sports?
This is an excellent way to give your son stronger fundamentals. We also work on sportsmanship and learning how to set up games (This frequently solves the “I’m bored” problem.)
Where do the boys play?
We user the gym, the playground areas, and all of the blacktop and grass fields.
Can I pay extra to have my son work 1 on 1 with a sports counselor?
Certainly! This will give him some extra skills and guarantee him a medal at the end! Please add the "One on One" option during checkout. VERY LIMITED SPOTS AVAILABLE!
Is there a trial period?
Regretfully, we cannot offer a trial period. We tend to close out quickly, and need to hire counselors based on the number of boys signed up. Additionally, when boys join and leave, it really makes the program unorganized.
Can I cancel my registration?
Unfortunately, the way the program is structured, canceling causes us a lot of issues. Every time we send the lists to the counselors, the canceled names reappear every week. In other words, please don't cancel once you register as it'll cause us a pretty big headache. We also don't get refunded the fees from the website or Credit Card. There are no refunds, but if necessary we might be able to give a partial credit.
What if there is bad weather or there is no school?
In case of inclement weather, you will receive an E-mail from the Bonanza and from Mrs. Weinberg with updates. If we miss more than one week, we cannot make it up.
What time does the Bonanza start and finish?
The Pre School boys start right after Yeshiva on Friday and are walked together to the gym at around 12:15. Their program ends at 1:20 promptly, although if they have an older brother in any bonanza they can stay until he is dismissed. The first and second grade boys start after Yeshiva (approximately 12:45) and finish at 1:45. The oldest boys end at 1:55.
Which boys are counselors in this program?
We accept boys from 6th to 8th grade as counselors and they are accepted on a first come first served basis. These counselors are trained and take their job very seriously. Boys can apply via the staff page - it will cost anywhere from $100 to $150 for each counselor. We do pay them (in cash this year), and the amount they receive is based on what grade they're in, how well they do their job, and the ratings from the kids and parents.
Are there any scholarships available?
That really depends on how many people sponsor. We know that it's difficult for some families, so if you can help out and sponsor during the checkout, it would be amazing. The cost per child is $250 for sponsorship. If you need to request a scholarship, please use the contact form. We cannot guarantee scholarships as they're based on applicants.
I have additional questions.
We would love to help. Please click here for any questions or e-mail us at [email protected] do not reach out to the Yeshiva of South Shore with Sports questions as that will only delay the response time.
